HOLLAND AND HOLLAND TOP LEVER HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 8918. (1886) Cal. 22 Hornet. 28″ Dovetailed steel bbls with full length raised rib, file cut at rear, and matted in front of raised front sight base, are engraved “Holland & Holland. 98. New Bond Street, London.” on right bbl. and “Winners of All the “Field” Rifle Trials, London. 1883″ on left. There is a single standing express rear sight, dovetailed through the rib, and two areas filled where a scope was attached. Steel front bead is longitudinally dovetailed into raised portion of rib. Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 295 Rook. Bottoms of bbls have recent Birmingham proofs for 22 Hornet. Diminutive Perkes patent sidelock action is marked on water table with SN, and patent information. Action features automatic safety (with SAFE inlaid in gold), double triggers, and rounded bar. Action and sidelocks have 60% coverage of very well executed English scroll and bouquet engraving. “Holland & Holland” is engraved on both lockplates. Scroll engraved steel trigger guard extends to horn pistol grip cap. SN is on grip. Beautifully marbled and stump figured Circassian walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over a ribbed horn buttplate, and features classically shaped beaded cheekpiece with shadow line, 20 LPI borderless checkering, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has checkering with mullered borders, steel tip, and Deeley patent release. Drop at heel: 3″, drop at comb: 1-7/8″. Weight: 8 lbs. 1.6 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. PROVENANCE: Factory email from H & H with specifications from their records. CONDITION: Very good, as refurbished. Bbls retain most of an old re-black. Rear sight has been modified, and is missing a leaf. Plugs where scope was mounted are brown in color. Action retains 10-20% case color in protected areas, the balance being silver to gray. Lockplates retain 60 – 70% case color, silvering at tails. Top lever and trigger guard retain most of their re-black. Stocks have most of an older hand rubbed oil finish with a few minor marks. Checkering has been re-cut. 22 Caliber liners have very fine bores. Action face has been welded and fitted with smaller diameter strikers, necessary for the higher pressures generated by the 22 Hornet cartridge. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Bores are excellent.
