BOSS HAMMERLESS EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE. SN 4229. (1892) Cal..450 BPE. This extremely scarce early Robertson era rifle has 27″ dovetailed steel bbls with “Boss & Co” and “75 St. James’s Street, London.” engraved on tops. Full length flat file cut top rib is fitted with a one standing, one folding leaf express rear sight with platinum lines, graduated for 50 and 200 yards. Silver bead front sight with folding night bead is longitudinally dovetailed into slightly raised front portion of rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN. Bbl flats have London black powder proofs for .450 express. Sling eye is attached to bottom rib. Square back top lever action features automatic safety with pivoting bolt (SAFE inlaid in gold), and double triggers. Action bar is rounded, which was to become a trademark of Boss guns. Donald Dallas in his book BOSS & CO. states on p. 187 “Robertson perfected in the 1890’s a new type of action, particular to Boss guns, that is still used today – “the round action””. Back action locks, for increased strength, are fitted into action bar in bar lock style. Action and lockplates have nearly complete coverage of nicely executed bouquet and scroll engraving. “Boss’s Patent Ejector” is engraved in rectangular cartouche on either side of action. “Boss & Co.” is in scrolled ribands on lockplates. Single beaded trigger guard extends to engraved steel grip cap, has scroll on bow, with more scroll and SN on tang. Nicely marbled and tightly figured Circassian walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-9/16″ over ribbed wood butt. Stock features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, drop points, and 18 LPI checkering with mullered borders. Sling eye and vacant gold oval are on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release, with SN on iron. Drop at heel: Approx 2-1/2″, drop at comb: Approx 1-3/4″. Weight: 8 lbs. 12 oz, LOP 14-9/16″. Old oak and leather case has brass corners, circular brass central medallion on lid, and many European hotel stickers. Interior is lined in red cloth, with Boss & Co paper label, and another label of “charges Pour Fusil”. Case contains a pair of aluminum snap caps, square pewter oil bottle, steel bullet sizer, some UMC nitro primers, some RWS primers, empty Kynoch 450 BP express box, and 18 pieces of Kynoch 450 nitro brass. There are also 6 loaded Kynoch cartridges with the gun. PROVENANCE: DAVID D. SOBEL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE COLLECTION. Ammo. CONDITION: Good. Bbls retain most of an old re-black, with a number of nicks and marks on top rib, and a few light pits on bbls, edges slightly rounded. Action and lockplates are polished bright over areas of light pitting. Engraving is slightly washed, but mostly sharp. Trigger guard is a well done replacement. Buttstock has most of an old oil finish, with sharp edges slightly rounded, with evidence of some repair at rear of right hand lockplate. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are out of time. Right trigger pull is very light. Bores are fair to good, mostly bright and shiny, but show erosion at breech ends with a number of pits. Case leather is dark with numerous stains, scuffs and abrasions. Interior cloth is fair. Reproduction Boss label is fine. Charge label is foxed and stained. Interior partitions are somewhat loose, and some areas show spray painting. Accessories and case cartridges are good. Cartridge box is fine. New case straps are good. Older replacement handle has detached on one side. Boss made very few double rifles, the largest number being hammer rifles, made before 1890. Any hammerless Boss rifle is exceedingly rare. 4-39128 MGM57 (10,000-15,000)
