STEPHEN GRANT BEST HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 5705. (1887) Cal. 577/500 BPE. .508 Bore diameter. 28″ Steel dovetailed bbls with full length file cut rib and extension are engraved “Stephen Grant” on left bbl, and “67A. St. James’s Street. London.” on right. One standing, one folding express rear sight with gold lines is marked “100” and “200” yards. Gold bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into raised portion of rib. Heavily reinforced splinter is stamped with SN. Bbl flats have London black powder proofs for 39 bore. Top lever action has beautifully filed fluted fences, fillets, and beads, and features an automatic safety with “SAFE” inlaid in gold. Bar locks are engraved “Stephen Grant”. Action and lockplates have 80% coverage of well executed tight English scroll. Trigger guard is scroll engraved with SN on tang which extends to engraved steel grip cap. Fantastically flame figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-9/16″ over coarsely checkered steel buttplate with 1″ top tang. Stock features nicely shaped beaded shadow line, right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and 22 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is a gold oval on toe line with two scratched in Hindi initials. Matching splinter forend has Anson release, and SN on iron. Drop at heel: Approx. 2-3/4″, drop at comb: Approx 1-5/8″. Weight: 10 lbs. 8 oz, LOP 14-9/16″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain most of an old re-black, edges slightly rounded. File cutting of rib, and engraving, are slightly washed. Breech ends of bbls show numerous marks, and small dings. Action is mostly pewter gray, a bit dirty; there may be case color in protected areas. Lockplates are polished bright. All engraving and edges are relatively sharp. Top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard are re-blued. Screw heads show some use. Wood shows most of an old finish, with sharp edges of cheekpiece and drop points rounded from years of carrying and use. Checkering has been re-cut, and is sharp. Forend has two rather large repairs at either side of tip, and another on right side toward rear. Action is tight. Just a glimmer of light shows between right bbl and action face. Left bbl is on face. Enfield rifle bores show considerable wear, and light pitting throughout. Grant double rifles are very scarce. 4-39171 MGM49 (7,500-12,500)
