*SMITH & WESSON MODEL 544 TEXAS SESQUICENTENNIAL ENGRAVED REVOLVER. Cal. 44-40. SN TWT0070. Spectacular engraved and gold inlaid DA revolver, #70 of 150, made to commemorate the 150th year of Texas independence. This beautiful revolver has a 5” bbl, red ramp & white outline sights, target trigger & hammer, with incredible 2-pc scrimshawed ivory grips. The engraving is first quality and about “B” or “C” coverage with numerous gold wire inlays in arabesque patterns interspersed with engraved arabesque patterns. The cylinder is unfluted and has a single gold band on the back edge and wide and narrow gold bands near the front edge with the spacing in between mostly filled with engraving. The left side of the yoke has gold inlay of the caliber, 44 on top and 40 on the bottom of a beautiful rose. The right side of the bbl has a continuation of the engraving on either side of gold inlaid large “TEXAS / 1836-1986”. The right side of the frame, opposite the yoke, is inlaid “70 of 150” in gold. The sideplate has a continuation of the engraving and gold wire inlay surrounding the silver outline of the State of Texas surmounted by a large gold, 5-point star. The trigger, hammer, ejector rod and cylinder release are all gold plated. The grips are magnum sized with very finely detailed scrimshaw of a wagon train consisting of four wagons with horses and mules and an outrider in the foreground on the right side. The rider is carrying a Texas flag and the rear wagon on the left side sports a Texas flag. It is accompanied by a special glass & walnut display case which contains a sesquicentennial medal, a stand to support the revolver and a bronze long horn steer and is signed “Covelly”. It is dated “1895” and marked “70/150”. It is also marked “Official Artist of the State of Texas 1984-85”. CONDITION: Extremely fine, as new. Appears to be unfired. Retains virtually all its high polish blue on the revolver and original finish on the grips. Case and bronze are equally fine. 4-51841 JR577 (5,000-10,000)
