FINELY ENGRAVED J. P. SAUER HAMMER DRILLING. SN 39971. (ca 1891) Cal. 16 x 16 x 295 Rook (?). 26″ Bernard Damascus shotgun bbls and steel rifle bbl are stamped “Dreilaeufeer – System J. P. Sauer & Sohn Suhl.” on tops of both shotgun bbls. There are two gold bands inlaid at breech ends. Full length matted rib has doll’s head extension. Folding rear sight has U-notch. Ivory bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into rib. Sling loop is soldered to rifle bbl. Bbl flats are stamped “Sauer” “Suhl” with two crown proofs, Sauer caveman logo, and “DAM:R”. Left side of rear lump is stamped with SN. Rounded bar, left side lever action has top lever bbl selector. Water table is stamped with SN, double crown proofs, caveman logo, and other proofs. Peninsula back action rebounding locks have short serpentine hammers. Action and lockplates are very finely engraved with shaded acanthus, and game scenes in semi-relief. Right side of action depicts fox flushing a large bodied duck over riverbank. Right lock has a very nice side-on portrait of a pointer. Left side of action depicts a hart and two hinds. Left side lockplate shows a hound attempting to take down a hind. Tails of locks are engraved “J. P. Sauer & Sohn” and “Suhl” in ribands. Steel trigger guard has matching shaded acanthus with two swimming ducks in marsh on bow. SN is on tang. Nicely fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13-13/16″ over checkered horn buttplate with embossed Sauer caveman logo. There is a sling loop on toe line, screwed to hinged cartridge trap with space for five rifle cartridges. Engraving of trap matches the remainder of gun with an oval vignette showing a buck running through woodlands. 22 LPI point pattern checkering has double line border. Matching splinter forend has Deeley release. SN is on iron. Bore diameter: left -.677, right -.676. Bore restrictions: left -.008, right -.006. Wall thickness: left -.029, right -.034. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/4″. Weight: 6 lbs. 8.6 oz, LOP 13-13/16″. PROVENANCE: Included are two cartridges for rifle bbl. Case is similar to 32 S & W Long and probably can be made from that brass. Fairly long jacketed bullet measures .312 in diameter. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain 90-95% original barrel brown, with excellent definition to pattern, with some minor scrapes and small areas of pitting. Action retains 20-30% original case color in protected areas, as do lockplates. Trigger guard and cartridge trap are silver gray. Wood retains most of its original oil finish with numerous small marks and dents from use. Checkering is slightly worn, and has not been re-cut. Action is very slightly loose. Locks are crisp. Shotgun bores are very fine, bright and shiny with a few minor pits. There is a deep sharp dent on top of right bbl 8-1/2″ from breech. Rifle bore is excellent, sharp rifling with some minor freckling toward breech. A very fine example of an early Sauer drilling. 4-39478 MGM52 (2,500-4,500)
