*FRANZ KETTNER TOP LEVER HAMMER DRILLING. SN 953. Cal. 16 x 16 x 8 x 57R (small base). 26-1/2″ Steel barrels with full length matted rib, are engraved “Franz Kettner” and “Koln – Suhl” on top. Breech ends of bbls have floral engraving and “Krupp Stahl” in circular logos. Rifle bbl is stamped with SN, proofs, and “7.7 mm”. Shotgun bbls have “nitro” stamped, with 16 ga. proofs on flats. There is a sling loop soldered to bottom bbl. Rounded top lever action has Greener crossbolt third fastener, and double triggers with front trigger set. Back action locks have rebounding serpentine hammers. Rifle selector switch on top tang has “Schrot” and “Kuggel” inlaid in gold. Action and lockplates have nearly full coverage of well cut engraving, having a background of large open acanthus scroll with stippled shading, and various game scenes. Right lockplate depicts auerhan cock and hen, with pointer flushing quail on action. Left side depicts a fox with pheasant in mouth on lock, and running roebuck on action. Trigger guard shows a woodcock or snipe. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over checkered horn buttplate, and features unusually shaped flat bottom shadow line cheekpiece, sling loop, steel grip cap, and 18 LPI point pattern checkering with line border. Matching schnable tipped splinter forend has Deeley release, with SN on iron. Bore diameter: left -.667, right -.668. Bore restrictions: left -.006, right -.014. Wall thickness: left -.038, right -.037. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 10.9 oz, LOP 14-1/8″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 20% original blue, cleaned to mostly silver, with pinprick pitting overall. Action retains nearly all of its coin finish, and is a pleasing muted silver color. Stocks retain nearly all their original finish with numerous nicks and bumps. Tip of buttplate is missing. Action is very slightly loose with forend removed, but tight with forend installed. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Set trigger works. Bores are fair. Shotgun bbls have light pitting throughout. Rifle bore is dark in grooves. A light weight drilling by this well regarded maker, in a rifle caliber easily made from 32-40 Winchester brass. 4-39738 MGM117 (1,500-2,500)
