SIX AIRCRAFT RIGGING TURNBUCKLES REMOVED FROM VON RICHTHOFEN’S FOKKER TRI-PLANE DR I 425/17. Two sizes of turnbuckle removed from Von Richthofen’s tri-plane. Three shanks measuring approximately 1-3/8” are made of stainless steel and marked “N S” on the center six-sided section. The gauge of the surviving wire is the same on two, but slightly lighter on the third. Three turnbuckles are larger, 1-9/16”; one made of brass and two of stainless steel. These turnbuckles are also marked “N S” and retain sections of heavier wire than the smaller three. Traces of iridescent sky-blue paint appear on five of the six turnbuckles. Carisella obtained these turnbuckles from Norman Burnell and Colin C. Collins, both of No. 3 Sqdn., AFC. Burnell reports that Fred Lienert of No. 3 Sqdn removed two turnbuckles from the tri-plane.
