*RARE MERKEL 303E OVER/UNDER SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 293081. Spectacular exhibition quality shotgun made for the 1999 IWA Show in Nurnberg, Germany. This show is a celebrated annual international event which attracts every major manufacturer of firearms & related sporting equipment from literally around the world. The exhibitors take great pains to display only their finest products. This shotgun has 28” superposed bbls choked FULL/MOD with flat, tapered, matted, solid rib, sgl bead, dbl Greener crossbolt extensions with dbl underbite, ejectors & dbl triggers with the front articulated. Mounted with spectacular, very fine checkered & carved, circassian walnut with 3-pc forearm & pistol grip stock, 14-3/8” over a Merkel black composition buttplate. It has raised side panels & a deep scalloped cheekpiece with sling stud & swivel on bottom of bbls with a corresponding stud & swivel in stock. Receiver & hand-detachable lockplates are wonderfully engraved with very deep, crisp vignettes of a pointer & two separated pheasants on left lockplate and a fox with two separated ducks on right lockplate, all surrounded by full coverage, very fine, extremely well executed, foliate arabesque patterns. Lockplates have cocked indicators & there is very subtle, very fine, gold wire borders around lockplates & frame with some gold wire worked into patterns. Top tang has “S” in gold and bottom of receiver has maker’s name in gold. Engraving extends about 1” over top bbl and on to the bbl reinforcements with gold wire on both sides and maker’s name & address in flat gold on left side with “KRUPP STAHL” and a 3-circle motif. Bottom of rear underbite has the Merkel logo in gold. Left lockplate is signed “R. WEISS”. Accompanied by its orig green cardboard box numbered to the shotgun. Label indicates the engraver was Ralf Weiss. Bore diameter: top – .728, bottom – .729. Bore restrictions: top – .030, bottom – .015. Wall thickness: top – .031, bottom – .033. Drop at heel: 2-1/2”, drop at comb: 1-1/2”. Weight: 7 lbs. 6.08 oz. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine, new & unfired. Retains all of its orig factory finish to both metal & wood.
