SWATCH OF MATERIAL FROM VON RICHTHOFEN’S FLYING COVERALLS. A piece of wool felt-backed material taken from the flying coveralls of von Richthofen. The material, brown in color, is smoothly finished on one side and felt-backed on the other. The felt backing gave the coveralls an additional warmth factor. The material was taken April 21, 1918 by Lt. F. R. Rawlinson, No. 3 Sqdn., Australian Flying Corps. Rawlinson donated a larger piece of the same fabric to the Canberra War Memorial in Australia. PROVENANCE: This piece of material was in the collection of Charles Donald prior to presentation to Carisella in the 1960s. A copy of Donald’s authentication is included. A photograph of a larger piece of fabric, possibly now in the Canberra War Memorial, is shown on page 238 of Who Killed The Red Baron? CONDITION: Fine. SIZE: 1-1/2” x 7/8”.
