FINELY ENGRAVED ALEX PROBST PINFIRE GAME GUN. SN NSN. Cal. 16 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 29″ Bernard twist barrels have gold bands at breech. Top of concave game rib has “ALEX. PROBST. DARMSTADT.” inlaid in gold. Sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Rounded body action has forward rotating bottom lever over forend with Jones type bite. Fences are nicely filed. Back action non-rebounding peninsula locks have well filed tall serpentine hammers. Action, locks, and hammers have meticulously and pleasingly executed semi-relief acanthus and scroll with shaded background. Lockplates have vignettes of sporting theme; right plate showing a hound worrying a fox, and left shows a trio of grouse in meadow with hill in background. Intricately filed scrolled trigger guard has matching scroll, and roebuck on bow. Grip area is nicely shaped horn to form semi-pistol grip. Honey-colored, nicely marbled, and fully fiddle figured European walnut buttstock measures 13-3/4″ over long tang steel buttplate engraved to match balance of gun. Stock features nicely shaped right hand cheekpiece, sling loop, and 20 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders. Steel forend attaches to bbl with small front lever, and continues the theme of acanthus scroll. Bore diameter: left -.674, right -.674. Bore restrictions: left -000, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.043, right -.038. Drop at heel: 2-3/4″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 9 oz, LOP 13-3/4″. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain a considerable amount of their original light brown, with some areas of darkening, and with spots of light pitting evident, but are mostly silver gray. Action, locks, and hammers appear to originally have been a French gray, and retain some of that in protected areas, but have silvered over most of their surface. Opening lever and forend lever retain 10-20% of their original blue, but are mostly silver gray. Stock retains most of its oil finish, cleaned and augmented on rear portion. Buttplate retains approx 50% bright blue. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. 4-39715 MGM81 (1,000-2,000)
