ALTIMETER BACKING PLATE FROM COCKPIT OF VON RICHTHOFEN’S FOKKER TRI-PLANE DR I 425/17. This plate was separated from the altimeter which was removed from the DR I by Fred O. Hyder, 51st Battn. Australian Imperial Force, then broken up and given to other members of his platoon. The markings on the plate are “AUSGEGLICHEN” (calibrated) “G. LUFFT. STUTGART” (maker and his location); “HÖHENMESSER FÜR FLUGZEUGE” (altimeter for aircraft) “No. 4810” (its serial number). On the reverse Hyder, while on leave in London, had his service number (3986), name, battalion (51st, AIF), and the legend “Taken from Capt. Baron Von Reishstofen (sic) April 1918” engraved. On 7 October 1966, Hyder made a formal legal declaration that the backing plate was his and in his possession since 1918. A photograph of the altimeter backing plate appears on page 141 of Who Killed The Red Baron? A photocopy of the document and four orig pertinent letters accompany the lot.
