*THE ONLY KNOWN PAIR OF BIG BORE WINCHESTER MODEL 70 TARGET RIFLES WITH CASE. SN G1766601 & G1815497. Cal.375 H&H and 458 Win/Mag. Unusual Model 70 target rifles with 26″ tapered heavy rnd bbls, target sights and scope bases are mounted on top along with Redfield International Bases on left sides of receiver bridges. They are mounted in very nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut stocks with “SUPER GRADE” floorplates & trigger guards and hand stop rails containing aluminum hand stops & wide military style sling swivels. Stocks have deep, flat-bottom pistol grips, dbl crossbolts and thin black Winchester pads. Accompanied by their orig, factory supplied, Bob Press-made, burgundy felt lined oak & leather trunk case, French fitted in bottom for both rifles, their individual bolts and nickeled Parker-Hale oil bottle, two boxes of ammunition, one of which is a Western Bear box and two covered compartments which contain two sets of Redfield International target sights. Also accompanying is an Al Freeland palm rest bracket for the forearm rail. Inside lid has a custom black & gold Winchester Repeating Arms Co. label that is also marked “MODEL-70”. These rifles were special ordered by the famous couple Peter & Patty Murray of Huntington Beach, CA. In the late 1980s. They are also accompanied by a letter dated June 26, 1989 to Mr. Murray, on U.S. Repeating Arms Co. letterhead, over the signature of B.W. Pardee, Custom Shop Mgr., wherein he states that “to my knowledge, this is the only set of Big Bore target rifles ever made here at the factory.” He continues, “In appearance, the gun is basically a Model 70 target gun. However, the receiver has been sandblasted, as has the rail, while the rest of the gun is brightly blued. The breech bolt and follower are hand engined (sic) turned, the guns are equipped with Redfield International sights and are cased in a Bob Press case.” These rifles are identified by caliber & SN in this letter. These rifles were the partial subject of an article which appeared in Vol. 17, Spring 1995 of The Winchester Repeater, the magazine of the Winchester Club of America. They also appeared in an article in Guns & Ammo magazine, March 1992, by Phil Spangenberger titled “The M-70 Winchesters You’ve Never Seen”. They also appeared in the publication The Complete Book of Winchester’s Model 70 with a subtitle “Inside Look Peter Murray Collection”. Copies of these two magazines accompany. This set was sold at auction when the Peter & Patty Murray Collection was liquidated a few years back. PROVENANCE: Peter & Patty Murray Collection. CONDITION: Both rifles are extremely fine, probably unfired, retaining virtually all of their orig factory finish to both metal & wood. Case is equally new. 4-39918 JR89 (7,000-10,000)
