Bbls stamped with SN “17050” and “Vickers”. Very nicely rose and scroll engraved action is marked “Lang’s Patent Ejector” on the bottom, and “Joseph Lang & Son” on the lock plates. “Safe” is inlaid in gold on the tang. No “1” is inlaid in gold on the top lever. Action has Grant style fluted fences. This gun was built in 1933, after the amalgamation of Atkin, Grant, Lang, and Lancaster, on Baker’s patent assisted opening action as used by Charles Lancaster and called the “Twelve Twenty.” Trigger guard is rose and scroll engraved with SN “17,050” on the grip. The nicely figured and streaked straight grip English walnut buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over an almost invisible 2-1/2″ lengthening piece w/ serrated wood butt; and features a gold oval w/ initials “M.B.E” (Factory records indicate that the gun was made for a Mrs. Elbert), and 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. The Anson release splinter forend has matching checkering and wood, and also has individual initials “MBE” inlaid in gold. “1” is inlaid in gold on the forend tip. Bore diameter: left -.731, right -.730. Bore restrictions: left -.022, right -.006. Wall thickness: left -.025, right -.027. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb:1-1/2″. Weight:5 lbs 14oz. Contains ebony 2-pc wooden cleaning rod, its original key, and two new straps. PROVENANCE: Copy of e-mail from Ken Duglan of Atkin, Grant, and Lang. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain 97%+ orig blue w/ a few minor marks toward the breeches. Bores are bright and shiny w/ no visible imperfections. Action retains 80-90% orig case color, thinning a bit at the bottom, and silver on the beads and tips of the fences. Lock plates retain 98% case color. All pin ends are finished bright. Trigger guard and trigger plate retain 95%+ of their orig blue. Top lever shows a touch of silvering at the tip. The stocks retain most all of their orig oil finish, except where lengthening piece is blended in over orig length wood. Checkering is clean and shows very little wear. Case colors on the forend tip are 50% silvered. Screw slots are clean and straight, but lock plate screws show use. Gun is tight and on face. Ejectors are in time. Trigger works well. Case leather is in good condition w/ a few scuffs. Interior cloth and partitions are good. Small piece of wood (3″ x 1/4″) missing from inner liner on front right hand side of case. Handle is intact, but tired. Straps are new replacements. The factory records show that although this gun was meant to be one of a pair, the guns were finished and sold separately. Gun number 2 went to India. This is a great example of a best quality gun from a period that many consider to be when the best guns of all time were built. 4-35402 MGM11 (22,500-32,500)
