TWO NEW ENGLAND SPLIT-BANISTER-BACK SIDE CHAIRS. Probably Connecticut. Late 18th/early 19th century. The first with an arched serpentine crest rail above three split banisters flanked by swelled ring-turned stiles with supressed ball-and-onion finials joined to the trapezoidal woven hemp seat, the sausage-turned frontal legs and back legs joined by double box stretchers retaining old red wash surface. The second of similar form, stripped and repolished, with spool finials, trapezoidal woven splat seat, the legs joined by double box stretchers. SIZE: The first: 43-3/4″ h. The second: 43-1/4″ h. PROVENANCE: From an eastern Connecticut home. CONDITION: The first example with old repolished surfaces and later woven seat; the second with stripped and repolished frame retaining traces of old surface, the seat old if not original. 9-92696 9-92697 (300-600)
