RARE GIBBS SLIDING BREECH DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 8 bore. No visible serial number. Very rare large dbl, possibly the only one known, with 34″ steel bbls, smooth concave rib with single bead. The patented breech with unusual top mounted firing pins is marked in the center on top “L.H. GIBBS / Patent / Jan. 8, 1858 / N.Y.” It is a bar-in-wood style action with back action locks and simple hammers. The lower tang and heavy trigger guard are articulated which, when depressed, moves the bbls forward out of the breech and allows them to tip down for loading and unloading. All the metal is basically undecorated except for light border patterns and some light engraving on the sides of the hammers and the buttplate tang. It is mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with long tapered forestock and checkered straight grip with smooth steel buttplate. CONDITION: Fine. Metal overall retains 70-80% orig blue with the receiver a blue/gray patina. Wood is sound with light to moderate handling and use marks with a fine old patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bores with moderate pitting in the left bbl, light pitting in the right bbl. 4-53756 JR33 (1,600-2,500)
