UNUSUAL STEPHEN GRANT BAR-IN-WOOD TOP LEVER HAMMER GAME GUN. SN 5062. (1882) Cal. 20 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 29″ Bold Damascus bbls are engraved “Stephen Grant. 67A St. James’s Street, London.” and “1” on narrow concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, and initials “HW”. Bbl flats have London black powder and 1999 nitro re-proofs for 70 mm at 950 bar. Small size bar-in-wood top lever action has nicely filed fences. Bar locks have tall serpentine hammers. “Stephen Grant” is engraved on each lockplate. Action, lockplates, and hammers have nearly full coverage of very well executed tight English scroll. Trigger plate has round finial with scroll engraving. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN, and “1” on tang. Marbled and lightly figured Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over 1-3/4″ well matched extension checkered wood butt with Purdey bump. Stock features drop points, 22 LPI standard point pattern checkering with mullered borders, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. SN and “1” are on iron. Bore diameter: left -625, right -.628. Bore restrictions: left -.015, right -.004. Wall thickness: left -.042, right -.038. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-9/16″. Weight: 5 lbs. 11 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. CONDITION: Very fine, as refurbished. Bbls retain nearly all of a very finely colored re-brown, with excellent definition to pattern. Engraving is left relatively sharp. Action and lockplates retain a considerable amount of their original case color, mostly in protected areas. Top lever and trigger guard have been re-blued. Engraving is slightly washed. Stocks retain nearly all of a professional hand rubbed oil finish, edges kept sharp. Checkering has been correctly re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny, with one or two minor pits toward breeches. An elegant and dynamic little gun, it should be a joy afield. 4-39688 MGM55 (10,000-15,000)
