FINE CASED CHARLES LANCASTER UNDER LEVER DOUBLE BARREL DAMASCUS HAMMER SHOTGUN. Cal. 10 ga. SN 4262. Beautiful English dbl with 32” Damascus bbls with smooth, concave, tapered rib, sgl bead & extractor. Rib has maker’s name & address plus is marked “PATENT BREECH LOADER BUILT FOR JOHN G. RICHARDSON BY CHARLES LANCASTER. 1868.” It has 2-3/4” chambers. Mounted with exceptionally fine, very highly figured, burl circassian walnut with checkered, splinter forearm secured with a sgl wedge & pistol grip stock, 14-1/2” over a checkered butt with heel & toe plates. It has a heavy steel, oval grip cap. Lockplates & receiver are very nicely engraved with extremely fine, well executed, English scroll engraving with about 50% coverage. Fences, hammers & top tangs have full coverage. It has the rabbit ear hammers with long spurs & back action locks, with a long bottom tang terminating at grip cap. The standing breech has recesses for the cartridge rims. Accompanied by its orig green felt lined, metal case compartmented in bottom for shotgun, brass loading tools, a glass oil bottle with pewter cap & a leather pouch of cleaning tools. There are also two UMC brass empties and there is a maker’s label in lid. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain most of their fine orig Damascus pattern, slightly faded. Receiver & lockplates retain most of their faded orig case colors, stronger & brighter in sheltered areas. Grip cap has mostly faded case colors with slightly stronger in the flute. Heel & toe plates are faded case colors. Wood is sound and retains about all of a wonderful professionally restored finish. Checkering may have been freshened. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bores with some fine pitting. Case is sound with exterior retaining about all of a restored finish. Interior is moderately faded & soiled with some wear. Label is yellowed & oil stained with some losses, but completely legible. 4-30598 JR387 (7,000-10,000)
