W. R. PAPE TOP LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH TEAGUE LINED BARRELS. SN 8729. Cal. 12. Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 30″ Fine Damascus bbls are engraved “W.R. Pape. Newcastle on Tyne Inventor. of. Choke. Boring.” on elevated flat pigeon rib, with doll’s head, and third grip extension. Extension has scroll engraving, and bbls have decorative bands at breech end. Bbl flats are stamped with SN, old Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers at 18.5 and 18.8, and newer Birmingham nitro proofs at 18.1. Flats are also stamped “Lined Barrel”, referring to the Teague full length liners that have been fitted to this fine gun. The high quality of work that this company is known for is evident. Case hardened action is stamped with SN, proofs, and “W.R. Pape” on water table, has well filed fences, and features doll’s head with pivoting bolt third fastener. Rebounding bar locks have nicely filed serpentine hammers, and are engraved “W.R. Pape” in riband. Action and lockplates have 80% coverage of nicely executed scroll with rose accents. Trigger guard is also scroll engraved, with SN on tang. Very nicely marbled and stump figured Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15-1/16″ over leather covered pad, and features drop points, and a silver shield crest plate at top of grip. Pape guns are known for their unusual checkering patterns, and this gun is no exception. Checkering is borderless with many lozenge shaped scallops and extensions. The entire effect is of a large flame, like something you’d see on a 1950’s hot rod. Splinter forend checkering matches the buttstock in inspiration, but is not so wild, and is in three panels. Forend has horn tip, Deeley fastener, and SN is stamped in barrel channels. Bore diameter: left -.715, right -.714. Bore restrictions: left -.017, right -.009. Wall thickness: left -.025, right -.035. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-3/4″. Weight: 7 lbs. 0 oz, LOP 15-1/16″. CONDITION: Very fine, as refurbished. Bbls retain 98% of very fine re-brown with excellent definition to pattern. Action is mostly pewter gray with traces of color in protected areas. Locks are a pleasing pewter gray with areas of case color remaining under hammers and other protected spots. Stocks retain virtually all very finely applied rubbed oil finish with a few marks and scratches from use. Wood is slightly under metal. There are incipient cracks behind lockplates. Checkering has been nicely re-cut. Leather covered pad is very fine. Action is tight. Top lever closes slightly right of center. Bbls are on face. Bores are as new. Locks are crisp.
