BOSS SIDE LOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH TWO SETS OF BARRELS AND CASE. SN 4248. Cal. 12ga. Double trigger. Automatic safety. Bbl set no. 1: (2-1/2″ Chambers) Measures 29-15/16″ and is engraved “Boss & Co. 73 St.James’s Street. London.” on the concave game rib. There is also some scroll engraving on the third fastener rib extension. (It is unusual for Boss to use a third fastener.) The top of the right bbl is engraved “Sir Joseph Whitworth’s.” and “Fluid Pressed Steel” is on the left. Bbl flats have standard London proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers w/ London re-proof in 1986 w/ bores at .736 and .732. The bottoms of the bbls are stamped w/ no. “4248” The loop is stamped w/ Whitworth tube nos. “12845” and “12846”. Bbl set no. 2: Measures 30-1/8″ and has identical top engraving w/ exception of a gold “C” inlaid at the breech end of the rib. (It is speculated in a letter from Donald Dallas to the consignor that the C may have stood for choke, since this later set of bbls has 2-3/4″ chambers and may have originally been made w/ tighter chokes than at present.) Bbl flats show orig London proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers and London re-proof w/ bores at .732 and .732. The bottoms of the bbls are stamped “4333” (Factory records show that these bbls were made for the same owner a year after the guns were completed. It is very often the case that a new set of bbls was given a separate SN.) THE ACTION is engraved in nicely executed rose and scroll w/ “Boss’s patent ejector” in a stippled rectangle on both sides. The lock plates are engraved “Boss & Co.” in riband. Tumbler ends have gold band cocking indicators. The trigger plate is engraved “Boss’s 22894 Patent”. “Safe” is inlaid in gold in front of the safety button. Trigger guard is engraved w/ scroll and the SN “4248” (1893) on the grip. The very nicely figured stump Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ to a checkered wood butt over a well matched 3/4″ wood extension and has nicely shaped drop points, vacant gold oval, 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. The Anson release splinter forend has SN “4248” stamped into the ejector housing, and has wood and checkering to match buttstock. Bbl set 1: Bore diameter: left -.732, right -.735. Bore restrictions: left -.017, right -.008. Wall thickness: left -.019, right -.027. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 6 lbs 7oz. Bbl set 2: Bore diameter: left -.732, right -.733. Purdey & Sons and another marked Boss & Co; pewter oil bottle marked Boss & Co; 2-pc ebony cleaning rod; wool mop; Boss & Co wiping cloth; and the original key.
