JAMES PURDEY SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK HEAVY DUCK SHOTGUN WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 12439. Cal.10ga. 2-7/8″ chambers. Dbl triggers. 31-3/16″ Steel dove-tailed bbls. Marked on concave top rib “J.Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid-Pressed Steel.” Bbl flats show black powder proofs and are both marked “10 B 11 M” and “Not for Ball”. Whitworth tube nos. 2454 and 2456 are on the loop. Robust action is engraved with very fine and well executed rose and scroll in typical Purdey house style. Action has side clips and Purdey hidden third fastener. Lock plates are marked “J. Purdey & Sons”. Bottom of action is marked “Purdey’s Patent”. Trigger guard is scroll engraved and also marked with SN 12439 for 1886. Nicely figured Circassian Walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over an old leather faced Silvers type pad and is checkered in 32 LPI typical point pattern with mullered borders and has tear shaped drop points and vacant silver oval. Splinter forend has matching engraving and checkering. Bore diameter: left -.780, right -.778. Bore restrictions: left -.040, right -.036. Wall thickness: left -.035, right -.031. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-1/8″. Weight: 9lbs 1.6oz. Abercrombie and Fitch marked oak and leather case has brass corners and is lined in dark green cloth. It contains unmarked pewter oil bottle, 2 Abercrombie and Fitch 10 bore snap caps, some cleaning equipment, and 2 keys. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 98% of a good quality re-black. Rib lettering and breech engraving are somewhat thin. Action is tight but left bbl is slightly off face. It retains 30-50% orig case color. Lock plates retain 60-80% orig.case color. Trigger guard, top lever, and safety button show 98% of a re-black with engraving somewhat washed. Buttstock and forend retain most of an old oil finish. Normal handling nicks and dings. Checkering has not been re-cut and is slightly worn. Bores mostly bright, and shiny w/ light pitting toward breech of rt bbl. Case in fine condition, smooth leather. Interior partitions tight. Few patches near where breeches of bbls and buttstock sit. 4-35191 MGM1 (12,500-15,000)
