JAMES PURDEY TOP LEVER BAR-IN-WOOD HAMMER GUN WITH EXTRA BARRELS AND CASE. SN 9151. (1874) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 29″ 3-Stripe Damascus dovetailed bbls are engraved “J. Purdey. 314-1/2, Oxford Street. London.” on low narrow concave top rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN and Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers at .740. Sleeved bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons, 314-1/2 Oxford Street. London.” on rib, which is also engraved “Choke”. Bbl flats show a mix of black powder and Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers, and are stamped “Not for Ball” and “Sleeved”. Typical bar-in-wood action has nicely filed fences. Bar action rebounding locks have serpentine hammers with dolphin heads. Action, lockplates and hammers have 80-90% coverage of very well executed small English shaded scroll. “Purdey” is engraved on each lockplate. “Patent” is engraved on top lever. Very nicely marbled and stump figured Circassian walnut buttstock measures 15″ over Silvers type pad, and features 20 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders. There is a vacant silver oval on toe line. Fully checkered splinter forend has steel tip, and attaches to bbl with side nail through engraved shaped steel escutcheons. SN and initial “P” (probably A. Phillips, Actioner) are on iron. Damascus bbls: Bore diameter: left -.735, right -.737. Bore restrictions: left -.004, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.030, right -.024. Drop at heel: 2-9/16″, drop at comb: 1-9/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 12 oz, LOP 15″. Sleeved bbls: Bore diameter: left -.726, right -.726. Bore restrictions: left -.030, right -.008. Wall thickness: left -.037, right -.034. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 13 oz, LOP 15″. Old oak and leather case has brass corners, and round central medallion on lid. Interior is lined in maroon cloth, and contains an old checkered horn buttplate. There are remnants of an original charge card for this gun, and lower left hand portion of Purdey label. CONDITION: Good. Bbls retain most of an old re-brown with good definition to Damascus. Engraving is washed. There is a lot of pitting under area where forend attaches. Sleeved bbls retain virtually all of their black. Action is gray to brown, with some color in protected areas, with pitting around perimeter of locks. Trigger guard is silver brown, but pitted and striated from years of handling and use. Wood retains most of an old oil finish, is under the metal; there are a couple of repaired cracks in front of trigger plate, but it is generally sound. Recoil pad has been temporarily screwed on, and not fitted, and is well under portions of buttstock. The original horn plate in case also fits the gun. Forend side nail slides loosely through escutcheons, and is probably a replacement. Front portion of forend tip has been replaced. There are numerous small nicks and chips along top edge of forend. All checkering has been re-cut, and done well. Damascus bbls are slightly loose in action, and slightly off face with forend removed, but tighten up with forend installed. Bores are bright and shiny, but show a number of minor pits in both tubes. Sleeved bbls are tight, but slightly off face. Bores are excellent. Locks are crisp. Case leather is dark, but has been stabilized, with numerous marks, scuffs, and compressions. Replaced interior cloth is excellent. New straps and handle are good. 4-39352 (7,500-12,500)
