*FINE & SCARCE SEYMOUR R. GRIFFIN CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD BOLT ACTION RIFLE.

*FINE & SCARCE SEYMOUR R. GRIFFIN CUSTOM SPRINGFIELD BOLT ACTION RIFLE. SN 662775. Cal. 30-06. A prime example of Seymour Griffin’s custom work built on a Springfield barreled action utilizing the orig March 1917 dated bbl and installed King front sight. Rear sight has been removed leaving the index groove on top right area over the chamber. Receiver has usual “1903” markings and rear bridge is mounted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight. Bolt & bolt handle, along with trigger guard & floorplate, are orig equipment. Floorplate & trigger guard are beautifully engraved by Rudolph Kornbrath with the vignette of a bugling bull elk on floorplate with light touches of foliate arabesque patterns above & below and a light scalloped border. The front extension and trigger bow are also beautifully engraved as are the screw heads. The front action screw hole is engraved with a fine floral rosette with matching rosette around floorplate release hole. Rifle is mounted in a nicely figured circassian walnut 1-pc stock, 14″ LOP, with typical early Seymour Griffin diamond checkering patterns with a blank space down the center on the bottom of the forestock. It has matching checkering on pistol grip which wraps over top of wrist with a distinctive centering line and flows around top & bottom tangs. Grip cap is smooth horn and buttplate is Winchester style checkered steel. Accompanied by a 4-page article by Michael Petrov which appeared on p. 32-35 of Precision Shooting, Dec. 2009. Mr. Petrov details the some of the biography of Seymour Robert Griffin, who began making stocks in the early 1900’s at the Hotel Breton Hall in Manhattan, New York, where he lived & worked until 1923 when he formed a partnership with James V. Howe to become the world famous Griffin & Howe Company. Prior to the partnership Mr. Griffin is known to have produced many fine custom rifles and apparently gained the attention of renowned rifle & shooting guru Col. Townsend Whelen who, according to several of Col. Welen’s articles, highly recommended Mr. Griffin for rifle remodeling. Weight: 8 lbs. 1 oz. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Overall retains most of its fine orig custom finish with strong bright blue on bbl & receiver with slight wear on front sight and some slight thinning on upper part of bbl. Floorplate & trigger guard appear to have been left in the white as was common practice by Mr. Griffin. Stock is sound with a few light, fine handling & storage nicks & scratches and a couple of minor bruises on left side by the receiver.
