JAMES PURDEY SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 14689. Cal.12ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 30″ chopper lump bbls marked “J.Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London.” “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid-Pressed Steel.” Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 1-1/8oz and are marked “choke” and SN “14689.” Rear lump is stamped with no. “2.” Whitworth tube nos. “12963” and “12964” stamped on loop. Nicely rose and scroll engraved, dbl trigger, automatic safe action is marked “Purdey’s Patent” on bottom. “Safe” is inlaid in gold. Lock plates are marked “J. Purdey & Sons.” Scroll engraved trigger guard is marked “14689” (Made in 1893). Dark streaked straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over checkered wood butt and features drop points and gold oval with initials “E.W.L.” engraved. Checkering is 22 LPI with mullered borders. Anson release splinter forend has SN “14689” , “2” and “Patent” marked inside. Engraving and checkering match the rest of the gun. The Abercrombie and Fitch marked leather case has the initials “A.M.J.” on the lid, and is lined in red baize cloth. Bore diameter: left -.730, right -.732. Bore restrictions: left -.021. (There is also a .003 recess behind the choke), right -.022. Wall thickness: left -.024, right -.029. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb:1-7/8″ . Weight:7lbs 1.6oz. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 95% re-black with lettering and engraving slightly thin. Bores bright and shiny w/no dents or imperfections. Chambers have been lengthened. Action retains 10% orig case color. Left lock plate retains 80% strong case color. Rt lock plate 40-60% faded color. Action is tight, and on face. Drop shows some wear. Ejectors are in time. Trigger guard shows 50-60% re-black. Top lever 10-20% orig blue. Screws show some use and are slightly widened. Stocks do not appear to be refinished, but have had oil rubbed in over the years. Checkering is slightly worn and dirty. Place on toe line where old oval has been removed and filled. Slight 1/2″ crack on the front left edge of the forend w/ 3/16 x 1/32 sliver missing. Case is in fine condition over all, smooth leather, interior partitions are tight. 4-35189 MGM3 (15,000-20,000)
