EXCEPTIONAL JAMES PURDEY ISLAND LOCK TOP LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 11847. (1884) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 29″ Dovetailed steel bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House, South Audley Street, London” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel” on narrow concave game rib. Webster,(?) Barrelmaker). Bbl flats have SN, London nitro re-proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers, as well as Birmingham re-proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers at 850 bar. “2” is stamped on bottom of rear lump. Case hardened action has very finely filed fences, side clips, and Purdey hidden third fastener. Island back action rebounding locks have serpentine hammers with dolphin heads. Action and locks have 80% coverage of meticulously executed very small shaded scroll with bouquets, which is the beginning of Purdey’s house style engraving as designed and in this case, probably executed by J. Lucas, head engraver. Lockplates are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons.” Bottom of round body action is engraved “Purdey’s Patent”. Top lever is engraved “Patent”. Blued trigger guard has standard scroll and SN at grip. Beautifully marbled and slightly stump figured Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over leather covered pad, and is checkered at 24 LPI with mullered borders. There is a vacant silver oval on toe line, as well as a small vacant silver circle at heel. Matching splinter forend has an Anson release with SN and “2” stamped on iron. Bore diameter: left -.736, right -.736. Bore restrictions: left -.015 recess choke, right -.006 recess choke. Wall thickness: left -.024, right -.024. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 2 oz, LOP 14-5/8″. Housed in an exquisite Ian Tomlin crafted English oak and leather case with canvas outer cover, has brass corners, brass circular medallion on lid, and push button lock. Leather trimmed canvas outer cover has shaped leather name plate embossed “Danny L Gomez” “Derwood” “Maryland”. Interior is lined in rich cobalt blue cloth with “James Purdey & Sons” gold embossed black leather label. Most major accessories are marked “James Purdey & Sons”. Included are German silver and ebony 2-pc cleaning rod, 3 ebony handled turn screws, pair of snap caps, oil bottle, vaseline container, chamber brush, leather wallet containing brushes, as well as a Thomas Bland marked bench cloth, and a key. PROVENANCE: Certificate from Gold Medal Concours, and framed certificate of proof from Birmingham proof house. CONDITION: Near new, as meticulously restored. This exceptional gun won the Vintager’s award at the 8th Gold Medal Concours d’Elegance of Fine Guns in September 2004. It appears that no time or expense was spared in refurbishing what was probably already a fine example of this all time classic game gun. Tomlin case and accessories are near new, with some minor discoloration of a small portion of the canvas on the outer cover. 4-39151 MGM20 (22,500-32,500)
