*20 GA. JAMES PURDEY BEST SIDE LOCK EJECTOR SHOT GUN WITH TWO SETS OF BARRELS AND ORIGINAL CASE. SN 22936. Cal. 20ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. Double triggers. Automatic safety. 26″ and 30″ Chopper lump bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid-Pressed Steel” on high narrow concave game ribs, w/ scroll engraving at breech. Bbl flats have London nitro proofs for one oz shot (2-3/4″). Bottoms of bbls are stamped “Choke” and SN “22936” (1925) and are engraved “Made In England” on splinter. 26″ Bbls have tube nos. “56192” and “56193” on loop, and bbl makers initials “SS” (Sam Simons), and are engraved on rear lump “R Modified L Full”. 30″ Bbls have tube nos. “56190” and “56191” w/ initials “AW” (Arthur Wilkes), and are engraved on rear lump “Full Choke”. Case hardened action has dual under lugs, bushed strikers, and Purdey hidden third fastener, and is engraved w/ very finely executed Purdey house style rose and scroll w/ “J. Purdey & Sons London” on bottom, and “J. Purdey & Sons.” on lock plates. Tumbler ends have raised rib cocking indicators. Trigger guard has scroll, and SN at grip. “Safe” is inlaid in gold on top tang. Beautifully figured and marbled French walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over checkered wood butt, w/ finely executed drop points, and 24 LPI flat top checkering w/ mullered borders. Splinter forend has Anson release, w/ SN and initials “PW” (Percy Wilkes) on iron. BARREL set 26″: Bore diameter: left -.618, right -.617. Bore restrictions: left -.014, right -.009. Wall thickness: left -.026, right -.026. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 5 lbs 12.5oz. BARREL set 30″: Bore diameter: left -.617, right -.616. Bore restrictions: left -.029, right -.027. Wall thickness: left -.029, right -.031. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs 1oz. Oak and leather CASE has brass corners, central brass medallion engraved “A.W. Hard New York”. Interior is lined in dark red cloth w/ Purdey label, and charge card w/ specifications for this particular gun. Accessories include: 2-pc rosewood cleaning rod, 2 ebony handled turn screws, ebony handled striker key, pair of 20 bore snap caps, bone striker bottle w/ spare strikers, and springs, Purdey marked square oil bottle, red leather wallet containing cleaning brushes, black leather wallet containing a pull-through, and various brushes and mops, and the original key. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain virtually all of their blue. 26″ Bbls showing the most use, w/ silvering at muzzles and breech ends. Action retains 20% orig case color, fading to mottled silver gray. Left lock plate retains 60% orig case color; right lock plate about 30%. Trigger guard, top lever, safety button retain virtually all re-black. Buttstock is an extremely well done replacement, of factory quality, probably by a Purdey stocker, w/ no visible imperfections, but a bit dry. Original forend has all metal parts re-blacked, and checkering re-cut. Action is tight and on face w/ both sets of bbls. Drop is good. Ejectors are in time. Screw slots are very good, show some use. CASE is fine, leather shows some scuffs, and is slightly dark. Straps and handle are intact. Partitions are tight. Cloth shows some rubs from contact w/ gun. Labels have some stains.
