*SUPERB AND UNUSUAL 20 BORE JAMES WOODWARD BEST QUALITY OVER AND UNDER WITH 2 SETS OF BARRELS AND ORIGINAL CASE. SN 6860. Cal. 20ga. Double Triggers. Automatic ejectors completed Nov. 1928 for Robert Tucker. Set number 1: 28″ Steel bbls w/ flat solid file cut rib are marked on the top barrel “James Woodward & Sons. 64. St.James’s Street. London.” on the left side, and have British provisional and definitive nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers on the right. Bottom barrel has proofs on the locking area as well as SN “6860”. Barrel set no. 2 has the same specifications as set 1, except that they are 32″ long, and are marked with SN “6866.” (Very often a second set of bbls is given a separate SN – factory correspondence states that these barrels were fitted in Nov. 1928, numbered 6866, 32″, 2-3/4″ chambers, chokes full both “for duck shooting”). The sleek small size bolstered action and side locks have very nicely executed rose and scroll engraving w/ “Woodward’s Patent Under & Over” engraved on the bottom of the action and “J.Woodward & Sons.” engraved on the lock plates. “Safe” is inlaid in gold in front of the typical Woodward T-shaped safety. Tumbler ends have gold line cocking indicators. Trigger guard is scroll engraved and shows SN “6860” on the grip. Slightly figured and streaked full pistol grip European walnut buttstock measures 15-1/4″ over a leather covered pad and has tear shaped drop points, horn grip cap, and individual initials “JT” inlet in gold on the toe line. Checkering is 28 LPI w/ mullered borders. Forend has Anson release with wood and checkering to match buttstock. Set 1 (28″): Bore diameter: top -.619, bottom -.618. Bore restrictions: top -.016, bottom -.008. Wall thickness: top -.024, bottom -.024. Weight: 6 lbs 5.1oz. Set 2 (32″): Bore diameter: top -.618, bottom -.619. Bore restrictions: top -.033, bottom -.015. Wall thickness: top -.022, bottom -.024. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight:6 lbs 7.6oz. Original oak and leather case w/ brass corners with initials “N.R.T.” and “Burlingame” on the lid. Interior is lined in scarlet baize w/ James Woodward & Sons label and notes from the manufacturer on care of gun. Accessories include 2 tins of cleaning fluids w/ Woodward labels, horn handled chamber brush, Horn handled turn screw marked “Woodward & Sons,” horn striker block, 2 A&F Co snap caps, striker case marked SN “6860” w/ spare strikers, old tube of Vaseline, leather wallet w/ pull through cleaner, cleaning brush and mop. PROVENANCE: Factory fax giving original specifications of gun and extra barrels. CONDITION: Very fine as refinished. Both sets of bbls retain 98% of very high quality London re-black w/ a few minor wear marks. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny w/ no visible imperfections. Action retains 80-90% London quality case color, silvering on action beads, and bolsters. Bright blue on trunnion pins mostly silver. Lock plates retain 98% bright color. Trigger guard and top lever retain 90%+ blue. The buttstock retains 98% of a hand rubbed oil finish. Checkering is clean w/ very slight wear. Forend has finish to match, forend iron silvered on lower right and left sides. Forend tip is 50% silvered. Action is tight and on face w/ both sets of bbls. Ejectors are in time. Case: Leather is smooth and in good condition, straps are replacements, handle is good. Interior partitions are tight. Cloth is slightly dirty from use. Accessories are in good condition, except the snap caps which are very well used. A truly wonderful gun … one couldn’t ask for much more! 4-35078 MGM20 (125,000-150,000)
