*MILLER AND VAL. GREISS SINGLE SHOT TOP LEVER STALKING RIFLE. SN 23063. Cal. 8 x 57 JR. 24-1/2″ Half octagon/ half round barrel with full length matted integral rib is engraved “Miller & Val. Greiss Kgl. Bayr. Hofgewehrfabrik Munchen” in unmatted portion of rib. One standing, one folding rear sight has triangular porcelain inlay under small U-notch of standing leaf, and is marked for 100 and 200 yards. Silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into raised front portion of rib. Rear portion of bbl is engraved “Fluss – Stahl” and “Krupp – Essen”. Bbl has single Kersten crossbolt extension and has band of decorative engraving around breech. Bottom of bbl has German proofs for 7.7 mm. and is stamped “Krupp – Stahl” and with SN. Nicely filed rounded scallop backed trigger plate action features automatic safety (“S” inlaid in gold), flip-up tang sight which folds into recess in tang, pin type cocking indicator, bushed striker, double set trigger, and Kersten bolt. Action is engraved with nicely cut scroll with rose bouquet highlights. Trigger plate is engraved “D. R. G. M. 407935 – 409728”. Horn trigger guard extends through pistol grip to horn grip cap. Lightly figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 13-11/16″ over engraved and coarsely checkered steel butt plate with trap, the center of which has a very fine rose bouquet. There is no mortise under trap. Stock features approximately 32 LPI point pattern checkering with line border, with sling loop and gold oval engraved with “W” surmounted by a princely crown, on toe line. Two piece full length forend has horn schnable tip, bail sling loop, and removable section with Deeley release which is checkered to match buttstock. Drop at heel: 3″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 6 lbs. 8 oz, LOP 13-11/16″. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 70% original blue, considerably silvered on high edges. Action is mostly silver to gray, but with some case color remaining in protected areas. Stock retains its original finish at grip, but butt portion has been refinished. Original section shows wear, as does checkering. Horn trigger guard is fine, but grip cap shows areas of restoration. Stock is slightly loose on action. Action is tight. Bbl is on face. Set trigger works. Bore is good, with strong rifling, slightly frosted throughout, with considerable erosion at throat. This is a fine handling little rifle of high quality, and all rifles of this type are fairly scarce. 4-40136 MGM37 (6,000-9,000)
