*E. J. CHURCHILL BOXLOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER HEAVY GAME GUN WITH THREE SETS OF BARRELS AND CUSTOM CASE. SN 1004. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″, 2-3/4″, and 3″ Chambers. 26-1/2″, 28″, and 30″ Barrels. 30″ (Original) Chopper lump bbls with raised concave game rib with doll’s head extension are engraved “E. J. Churchill. Gun & Rifle Manufacturer.” and “S. Agar St. Strand, London. W.C.” on tops. There are 1-3/4″ triangles of scroll engraving at breeches, and 3/4″ matching triangles at muzzles. (This engraving matches that which is found on the other two sets of barrels.) Bottoms of bbls are stamped with no. “1004”. Bbl flats show London re-proof for 3″ chambers. 28″ Bbls with matching rib extension, and scroll are engraved “Merkel Brothers”, “Suhl – Germany” on tops. There is a folding ghost ring aperture rear sight mounted in rear portion of rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped “Bohler, (star logo), Stahl” with Merkel number “23793”. Gun no. “1004” is on bottom of right bbl. Bbl flats show German nitro proofs with proof date of 9/36. “70” is stamped into ejector lugs. Merkel logo “G & M” intertwined initials in shield is stamped on left side of rear lump. 26-1/2″ Bbls match the 28″ bbls, as to markings and engraving, as well as rear sight. The only exception is that ejector lugs are stamped “65”. Case hardened boxlock action features non-automatic safety (“SAFE” is inlaid in gold), side clips, pivoting third fastener engaging doll’s head, and non-selective single trigger. Action has 60% coverage of English scroll engraving with “E. J. Churchill” in scroll ribands on each side. Blued trigger guard has initials “R.W.C.” relief engraved on trigger guard bow. Nicely mottled and slightly figured straight grip European walnut buttstock measures 14″ over scroll engraved steel skeleton buttplate. Stock features vacant silver oval, 22 LPI finely executed point pattern checkering with mullered borders, and drop points (probably the work of R. G. Owen who produced the gun with the same owners initials, also in this sale). Matching splinter forend has Anson release. 30″ Barrels with 3″ chambers measure: Bore diameter: left -.732, right -.730. Accessories include 2-pc rubber coated cleaning rod, 2 leather wallets containing cleaning cloths, William Evans marked horn handled chamber brush, Parker Hale marked horn handled turn screw, unmarked ebony handled turn screw, pair of 12 ga. AGP marked snap caps, and cleaning mops and brushes. CONDITION: Very fine, as refurbished. Merkel barrels are near new. Original 30″ barrels show virtually all of very high quality rust blue with engraving added at breeches and muzzles to match Merkel bbls. Action retains 30-40% original case color. Floorplate retains most of all of what appears to be old re-black. Trigger guard was replaced when new bbls were made, and is excellent. R. G. Owen made buttstock is excellent with a few minor marks and nicks from handling and use. There is some slight wear to the blue at the heel of the buttplate. All bbls are tight and on face. Ejectors are in time. Single trigger works well. All bores are excellent, with no visible imperfections. Case leather is excellent, but with a few minor scuffs, and zipper marks from the outer cover, which is fine (but zipper has come off track). Straps are fine. Handle has detached on one side.
