ELEGANT ONE-OF-A-KIND J. P. SAUER SINGLE SHOT SIDELOCK, SIDE LEVER, ROUND ACTION STALKING RIFLE. SN 43124. Cal. 11 x 56 R. .440 Bore diameter. 7-Groove Alexander Henry style rifling. This exceptionally fine rifle is illustrated in color plates on pages 169 – 171 of J. P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL – WAFFENSTADT by Jim Cate. 26-5/8″ Steel barrel has flat matted integral full length rib with doll’s head extension. “J. P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl” is in milled out section of rib. Unmarked one standing, one folding U-notch rear sight is dovetailed through rib, and small silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into breech end of rib. Bottom of bbl is stamped with SN, “715G”, and has 2 Sauer “Caveman” logos. Another logo appears on bbl flats. Sling loop is soldered to bottom of bbl. Nicely sculpted sidelock action has rounded bar. Lock is mounted on right side with line tumbler end cocking indicator and bolt. Left side has a matching sideplate. Side lever is on left side of action, and actuates a Purdey type double under bite. Tang safety is non-automatic and “Sicher” is in relief on shaded background. Action and lockplates are engraved with about 60% coverage of nicely cut Germanic scroll. “I. D. Moritz – Sohn” is inlaid in gold in riband on front area of left sideplate. “Leipzig” is on same area of right lockplate. “Sicher” is inlaid in gold behind bolt. Single set trigger is mounted in trigger plate. Large bow trigger guard has matching engraving with SN on long tang. Very finely marbled and slightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over checkered horn buttplate which has central embossed shield inlaid with a silver plate. Flat top, point pattern checkering is at 24 LPI and has double line border. There is an engraved hinged cartridge trap on toe line, with space for 4 cartridges. Sling loop is screwed to its tang. Matching small splinter forend has Anson release. Drop at heel: Approx. 2-7/8″, drop at comb: Approx. 1-7/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 9.6 oz, LOP 14-1/8″. With rifle there are two cartridges which fit the chamber; one appears to be a brass .410 cartridge, and the other a regular rifle cartridge, that is loaded with a .450 diameter lead bullet. Cartridge case is very similar to .444 Marlin, and it appears cartridges can be made from that brass. PROVENANCE: Two brass cartridges. CONDITION: Excellent. Bbl retains 95% plus original blue, slight silvering at muzzle. Action retains 90% plus original case hardening color, slight silvering on high edges, and on bottom. Lockplates retain nearly all of their color, with some loss on right lockplate toward bottom, from cleaning. Trigger guard retains 50-60% original blue, and cartridge trap most of its case color. Stocks retain most of their original rubbed oil finish with a few minor dings and compressions. Bore is excellent, near mint. Action is tight. Set trigger works. An exceptional rifle. 4-40675 MGM71 (15,000-20,000)
