RARE MARTIALLY MARKED EARLY SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

RARE MARTIALLY MARKED EARLY SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 16293. Very rare Samuel B. Lewis inspected cavalry Colt. Bbl has been slightly reduced to 7-5/16” and the original front sight modified. It has 1-pc walnut grips and is nickel-plated. Bbl has the slanted 1-line address with daggers at each end. There are small “L” proofs on the various parts, and has its original bull’s eye ejector rod head. One of the great rarities in martial single action is a Lewis sub-inspected revolver. He apparently only inspected about 360 pieces in his short tenure. It is reported that as of May 1997 there were only 18 other recorded Lewis inspected single actions known. In a conversation with John Kopec he reported that serial numbers 16291, 16294 and 16295 were all reported as nickeled revolvers. He stated that these were reclaimed militia revolvers that were nickeled and resold when they were in like-new condition. An unproven speculation is that most, if not all, of the Lewis inspected revolvers were issued to the Iowa Militia. Our revolver was discovered in South Dakota where the consignor currently lives. CONDITION: Nickel plated, as noted. All markings appear to be authentic and sharp with all numbers matching including the bbl & cylinder. Grips have a number penciled in the channel, but it is illegible. Bbl apparently was damaged around the muzzle and reduced accordingly. Overall, our revolver retains about 60% strong bright nickel with spots of heavy pitting near the muzzle and on the left side of the bbl and on the sight. Cylinder has nickel in the flutes with the balance gray metal color with light pitting. Grips are very worn and dinged and appear to have been scraped and are missing chips at the toes. Mechanics are crisp, strong bright bore and a few spots of light pitting. Chambers are lightly pitted. 4-51521 JR728 (7,500-12,500)
