SMILIN’ SAM FROM ALABAM’ PEANUT VENDOR. A classic coin-operated vending machine from the second quarter of the 20th Century, originally these machines were painted black, but then altered and subsequently painted red with black highlights and lettering. A coin would be deposited in the slot and you would pull Sam’s tongue out and it would deposit a handful of peanuts. A larger than life, and somewhat comical head was more appealing than the standard peanut vendor of the time period. This particular example has been repainted many years ago and is acceptable in its present condition. Cast of aluminum, this is the earlier version with a raised coin slot, the latter versions had a flat steel slot. Mechanism intact but somewhat arbitrary and sluggish and in need of minor adjustments and/or cleaning. SIZE: 14″ h. CONDITION: Overall good, hairline crack to rear casting and upon close examination hairline cracks visible in coin slot, replacement lock. 1-9237 (800-1,200)
