MID-18TH CENTURY ENGLISH WOODEN LADY DOLL. A rare and impressive example of English artistry in wood doll-carving and painting, this magnificent doll has a great presence. With lovely large black glass eyes which pull in an admirer’s gaze, delicate finely-dotted eyebrows, softly blushed cheeks accenting her gessoed face with her pert little chin. Her fine crisp red lips show a hint of smile and are defined by the tip of her shapely philtrum. Her wooden body is articulated at elbows, hips and knees. The mortise and tenon joints enable a lifelike movement and there is refined carving of the ankle bones, feet and shapely hands. She retains her dark brown human hair wig which is topped by a lace fontange (a particular headdress popularized by Madame Fontange), and she wears a lace mantua over a red silk brocade dress (which probably originally had a pannier hoop that did not survive the centuries with her.) Beneath her dress are a plain chemise and an off-white quilted petticoat, stockings and charming red leather shoes with ties. SIZE: 28″ t. CONDITION: Overall in wonderful condition. Her finish has been given a preservative coating to secure some lifting paint, or possibly some paint enhancement. 1-8071 (20,000-30,000)
