MARIUS JEAN ANTONIN MERCIE (French, 1845-1916) DAVID VAINQUEUR. Outstanding life size bronze with dark brown patina shows David after dispatching Goliath with sling and stone approached the fallen giant, unsheathed his sword and severed his head. Mercie has depicted the victor having one foot on Goliath’s gaping head while resheathing his sword. Originally cast in five sizes by Barbedienne and later a life size casting was done by Thiebaut. Mercie won first prize in Rome in 1870 which was a totally nude figure. The later and different sizes incorporated a loin cloth as this one depicts. The base is signed “A + Mercie” and does not carry a foundry mark that we can find. We are not sure of the foundry of this casting or the issue date. PROVENANCE: From a fine Camden, Maine home. SIZE: 69” h x 36” at widest. CONDITION: There is some reminisce of plaster still in the grooves but generally this is in very good condition. 9-28843 (15000-25000)
