H. G. CORDES HAMMER UNDERLEVER DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 6519. Cal. 20 Ga. .640 groove diameter. 1-3/4″ Chambers. 26″ Bernard Twist barrels have a high flat top rib which is inlaid in gold “H. G. Cordes Bremerhaven” within gold wire inlaid fancy surround. Rear sight is single standing leaf, dovetailed through rib. Front sight is an acorn bead also dovetailed through rib. Bottoms of bbls have Belgian proofs and SN. Eight-groove rifling has U-shaped grooves and slow twist, at about 1 in 60. Rounded underlever action is nicely filed. Back action non-rebounding peninsula locks have robust broad hammers with high spurs. Strikers slide in top of action and are impacted by hammer breasts. They are retracted by the action of cocking hammers. Both triggers are set. Action, lockplates and hammers are beautifully engraved with large flowing open scroll, highlighted by gold wire inlay on main tendrils. This scroll surrounds vignettes of deer and stags on each lockplate and top of action. Blued steel trigger guard bow has gold bands on either side of central motif of recumbent stag. Pistol grip is formed by a piece of scroll carved horn at back of bow. Very finely mottled and streaked European walnut buttstock measures 14-3/16″ over steel buttplate with long top tang which has gold inlaid scroll matching action. Right side of stock is mounted with elephant ivory sliding patchbox cover with button latch. Stock features cheekpiece for right hand shooter and sling loop. In place of checkering there is very finely carved relief acanthus and scroll with shaded background. Left side of stock behind cheekpiece has detailed high relief carving of hounds attempting to take down leaping boar in woodland background. Boar’s tusks are bits of inlaid ivory. Forend remains attached to action, is uncheckered, and is fitted with large carved ivory tip. Bbls attach to forend with side nail through oval steel escutcheons. Drop at heel: 2-11/16″, drop at comb: 1-7/8″. Weight: 8 lbs. 6 oz, LOP 14-2/16″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain nearly all of a high quality re-brown with excellent definition to pattern. Some bits of gold wire and letters are missing from maker’s name and surrounds. Action has been cleaned and lacquered, with traces of case color in protected areas. Stocks retain an old rubbed oil finish. Carving shows some wear, but is quite pleasing. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Set triggers work. Bores are excellent, smooth, bright and shiny, with a few scattered minor pits. 4-40206 (8,500-14,500)
