RARE & HISTORIC COLT FAMILY BIBLE. Large leather bound Holy Bible, 12-1/2″ x 10-1/2″ x 3″ with decorated front and back covers and a ribbed spine having “Holy Bible” impressed with gold. The fly leaf indicates it was printed in England in “1854” by University Press. It is printed in English and the pages are edged in gold. Toward the back 1/4 of the Bible, in the space between the Old Testament and the New Testament, are three hand written pages in quill ink script that read: “Samuel Colt, son of Christopher and Sarah Caldwell Colt was born at Hartford Ct. July 19.1814. / Elizabeth Hart Jarvis, eldest daughter of Rev. William, and Elizabeth Miller Jarvis was born at Saybrook Ct. October 5. 1826. / Samuel Colt and Elizabeth Hart Jarvis, were married at Christ Church Middleton, by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Brownell, on the 5th of June 1856. Samuel Jarvis Colt was born at Hartford, February 24, 1857 between 8 & 9 o’clock am was baptized on Sunday, pm May 1st 1857 by Rev. E.A. Washburn in Charter Oak Hall building Died at Hartford Dec. 24th 1857 of congestion of the lungs and brain”.

“Caldwell Hart Colt was born at Hartford Nov. 24, 1858 between 8&9 am. Was baptized Dec. 29th at noon, at home by Rev. E.A. Washburn. / Elizabeth Jarvis Colt was born at Hartford Wednesday, Feb. 22nd 1860 at 8 o’clock p.m. Was baptized Sunday, May13th between morning and evening service at home by Rev. E.A. Washburn with water from the River Jordan brought and presented by Gov. Thos. H. Seymour. Died at Hartford Oct. 16th 1860 aged seven months and twenty five days of teething and cholera infantum. / Samuel Colt died at Hartford Friday morning Jan. 10th 1862, aged 47 years and 6 months. ‘How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod.'”

“Henrietta Selden Colt, was born at Hartford, Wednesday May 23, 1861. Was baptized at home by the Rev. E.A. Washburn Sunday afternoon Oct. 1861. Died in Hartford Jan 20th 1862 of ‘Diptheria aged 7 mos. And 28 days. A daughter still born – July 25th 1862. ‘All thy waves and storms are gone over me.'”

CONDITION: The spine is broken and loose in several places and the back hard cover is also loose. The covers have worn edges and corners with light soil and some staining, otherwise the pages appear to be all intact, slightly yellowed with a few pieces of old tape on the fly leaf and one or two other pages. There is some light foxing on a few of the pages. The gold edging appears fine. 4-51988 JR862 (10,000-15,000)
