EXTREMELY FINE WESTLEY RICHARDS DOUBLE RIFLE SHOTGUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE. SN 4816/4817. Cal. 13ga (.718) and .714 Rifle. 30″ Damascus RIFLE bbls have 10 grooves, are marked “Westley Richards 170 New Bond St. London” and have one standing, two folding express rear sight and transversally dove-tailed front on a wide flat rib. Bottoms of bbls are marked w/ Birmingham provisional and definitive proof marks, “W.R” “GT” SN “4816”. The patent breeches are stamped “4816” on the hooks, have vented platinum blow outs, and scroll engraving at breech end of bbls. 32″ SHOTGUN bbls are numbered 4817, but have all the lettering & proof marks of the other bbls, w/ exception of sling eye on front ferrule of rifle bbls. The rifle bbls have a rosewood ramrod w/ removable end plug. Ebony shot gun ramrod has SN stamped in front end w/ brass capped worm in other. Front action side locks are separated by wood from the breeches w/ finely executed shaded open scroll and sliding safeties behind hammers, and are engraved “Westley Richards.” Flat serpentine hammers are scroll engraved and terminate in dolphin heads. Breech iron has full coverage of shaded open scroll. The looped pistol grip trigger guard has shaded open scroll terminating in clover leaves w/ SN 4816 in grip. The pineapple and thimble are engraved w/ shaded scroll. The nicely marbled Circassian walnut stock measures 14-1/4″ over a long tang steel butt plate and features double filleted and rounded right hand cheek piece, 16 LPI checkering w/ mullered border, vacant silver rectangle at top grip and sling eye. The original quartered oak case has inset brass corners, closing hooks, and folding D-shaped carrying handle in lid. Interior is lined w/ green cloth w/ Westley Richards label, marked in pencil 4816 on wood of lid under the label. White bone handled compartment lids. Accessories include a Sykes patent tin powder flask, engraved “Sir F. H. Bathurst, BT.”, leather shot flask, rosewood and leather ramming hammer, horn covered brass bottle w/ 2 nipples, cloth bag for caps w/ label from Westley Richards, 2-pc ebony cleaning rod, various balls, wads, and caps. CONDITION: Very fine. Rifle bbls retain 60-70% of their lacquered brown w/ fine pitting mostly along outer edges where they’ve been in contact w/ case. Bores are very fine, bright and shiny w/ slight evidence of fine pitting in muzzle of right bbl. Shotgun bbls retain 80-85% of their lacquered brown finish w/ some spotting and pitting in rear portion of rib, and considerable amount along right side where in contact w/ case. Bores are bright and shiny. Locks retain most all their case color, as does the breech iron. Trigger guard retains 85-90% bright blue. Butt plate about 10% on bottom, but very strong on top tang. Stock retains most all of its orig varnish, w/ numerous nicks and dings from use. Small repair just above left lock plate. Case is good, 2 fairly long cracks on lid. Interior cloth is original and in good condition, some staining in lid from contact w/ bbls. Partitions are good. Label is fair, rubbed through where in contact w/ hammer, some stains, and considerable silverfish damage. Flask is heavily dented and repaired on its right seam. Other accessories are good. Shot bag label is cracked and dirty and hard to read. Very fine combo in exceptional condition by one of England’s most highly regarded makers. 4-35586 MGM50 (13,000-18,000)
