WOODWARD BEST QUALITY “AUTOMATIC” SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN. SN 5219. (1897) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 29″ Chopper lump bbls are engraved “James Woodward & Sons. 64 St. James’s Street. London. S. W.” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel” on concave game rib with scroll engraving and feathered band at breech end. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN, “J. W & S” and “Whitworth Steel”. Bbl flats have London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Case hardened sidelock action has SN on water table. Breechface is marked with “The Automatic Trademark” and “James Woodward & Sons”. Action features side clips, automatic safety with typical Woodward “t-shaped” safety button (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), and bolstered tumblers with gold line tumbler end cocking indicators. Action is filed with typical Woodward arcaded fences. Lockplates and action feature 90% coverage of very finely executed shaded scroll. “J. Woodward & Sons.” is engraved in cartouche on lockplates. Trigger guard extends to pistol grip cap, and is scroll engraved with SN at hand. Nicely marbled European walnut buttstock with unusual long horn capped semi-pistol grip, measures 14-3/8″ over leather faced Silvers type pad featuring drop points and silver oval on toe line engraved “W. F. P.” Point pattern checkering is approx 22 LPI with mullered borders. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.727, right -.728. Bore restrictions: left -.013, right -.007. Wall thickness: left -.029, right -.030. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 6 lbs. 10 oz, LOP 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain virtually all London quality re-black. Engraving is slightly washed. Action and lockplates have traces of case color in protected areas, but are mostly silver gray. There’s some slight pitting on breechface. Wood retains most of an older hand rubbed oil finish. Wood is slightly under metal. Checkering has been correctly re-cut. Pad is new. Action is very slightly loose with forend removed. No movement is felt with forend in place. Ejectors are in time. Bores are fine with some minor frosting in right bbl. Left bbl is excellent.
