RARE J.D. DOUGALL DBL BBL HAMMER DAMASCUS SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 2728. Very rare & unusual dbl with Dougall’s patented “Lockfast” breech system. It has 29-3/4″ bbls choked IMP-CYL/CYL with concave tapered smooth rib with single bead and the maker’s name with London address, although Dougall is believed to have been a Glasgow gun maker. The receiver has rounded action with beautifully scalloped fences and noseless “rabbit ear” hammers on back action locks. The receiver, lockplates, hammer, trigger guard & top tang are beautifully engraved with about 50% coverage extremely fine English foliate arabesque patterns. The maker’s name is on each lockplate and bottom of the receiver. It also has “PATENT LOCKFAST” on the bottom. It is fitted with highly figured, streaky, French walnut wood with full checkered splinter forearm secured with a single wedge through engraved escutcheons with an ornate engraved tip and engraved iron. The stock is checkered straight grip with very long top & bottom tangs, 14-1/8″ over a thick-checkered rosewood buttplate. The patented Lockfast system consists of a long thumb lever on the right forward side of the receiver which, when depressed, rotates the hinge pin which is cammed, which moves the bbls forward to allow them to tip down. When the lever is rotated back into locking position the rear of the bbls mate with projections on the standing breech, which fit into recesses at the rear of the bbls and also slides a heavy bite into a recess in the receiver thereby making the lock up extremely sound. The extractors are spring loaded. Bore restrictions: left – .013, right – .000. Drop at the heel 2-3/4″, drop at the comb 1-3/4″. Weight: 6 lb 8.8 oz. Bbls are recently nitro-proofed to 2 ¾”. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain most of a fine professionally re-browned finish with about 90% orig Damascus pattern. Rest of the iron is a silver/gray patina. Wood is sound and retains virtually all of a beautiful professionally restored finish with freshened checkering and minor nicks & scratches. Mechanics are fine. Bright shiny bores with one small dent in the right side. 4-54327 JR201 (3,000-5,000)
