EXTREMELY RARE EHLERS TYPE COLT BABY PATERSON REVOLVER. Cal. 31. SN 323. One of the great rarities in Colt collecting today is the Paterson revolver and the most scarce of all is the Baby Paterson of which only about 500 were ever made in the 1830’s and 40’s. Tiny pocket model revolver with 2-15/16″ oct bbl marked on the top flat “Patent Arms Paterson NJ-Colt’s Pt.” The space between “Patent Arms” and the rest of the address is about 1/4″. Each end of the legend has a propeller shaped motif and it has a tiny brass cone shaped front sight. The bore appears to have eleven grooves with slight right hand twist. There is a loading lever and rammer attached to the bottom of the bbl with a German silver retaining clip. It has 5-shot cylinder with round cylinder stop holes and bears the centaur motif scene. It has the usual folding trigger with a short serrated hammer spur and 1-piece walnut grips. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, all matching except the rammer and grips which do not appear to be numbered. Overall this revolver retains about 90% strong bright professionally restored finish with light muzzle and edge wear. It appears that the muzzle end of the bbl and face of the cylinder have been slightly dressed down and there is fine pitting around the nipples on the back of the cylinder. There is also some fine pitting around the top face of the recoil shield. Most of the frame screws and grip screws are slightly battered. The grips have a seam down the center and are slightly shrunken as there is a cloth shim in the back strap groove and retains 50-60% of an old refinish. Mechanics appear to be fine, strong bore with moderate pitting. 4-53437 JR833 (25,000-40,000)
