MASSIVE JOHN DICKSON & SON PERCUSSION 8 BORE DANGEROUS GAME RIFLE. SN 1087. Cal. 8ga. 2 groove. Bores measure .822 and .925 across the grooves. 20″ Bbls are engraved “John Dickson & Son. 60 Princes Street Edinburgh” on flat one inch wide raised rib w/ 3 folding leaf platinum lined rear sight, w/ leaves out to 200 yds. Inverted V front is screwed on block. Naive portrait of a broadside elephant engraved at breech. Breech plugs have platinum blow outs. Bottoms of bbls have London proofs and SN “1087”. Two inch wide sling loop mounted on ramrod pipe. Ebony ramrod has brass tips. SN also stamped on ends of breech plugs. Front action locks w/front mounted stalking safeties have nicely executed large open scroll w/ “John Dickson & Son” engraved. Tall flat chamfered hammers have matching open scroll. Breech iron has more open scroll, and naive face-on portrait of lion. Iron trigger guard/ pistol grip is also scroll engraved w/ SN 1087 at grip. Trigger plate and thimble end in stylized pineapple motifs. Dense figured European walnut buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over steel long tang butt plate, engraved w/ stags head on heel, w/ coarse checkering, a large steel sling button, shadow line right hand cheek piece, and spring loaded patch box engraved w/ coat of arms w/ shield featuring eagles heads holding a branch, crossed w/ wagons all surmounted by a quartering eagle w/ spread wings, and a horse’s head rampant. Motto: “Virtute Doloque” is in a riband under the shield. Weight: 17 lbs. CONDITION: Good. Bbl retains traces of orig finish. Locks and mountings are all cleaned to silver and gray. Stock shows much use and handling w/ evidence of some sanding and cleaning. One inch by 1/8″ piece missing by right lock plate. Checkering is considerably worn. Bores are very good. Right safety does not work. Locks are crisp. Bbl key shows numerous chips on head. Original ramrod shows considerable wear. A wonderful old rifle that has certainly been there, and come back. Although factory records do not exist for these early Dicksons, certainly some history of this rifle could be gleaned from research done regarding the crest. 4-35894 MGM105 (25,000-35,000)
