ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We indicated that ammunition was supposedly being made. This has been confirmed by Jamie McGrew, USA Distributor for Holland & Holland Sporting Cartridges.

HOLLAND AND HOLLAND HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK TOP LEVER PARADOX. SN 11564. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. Col. Fosbery’s patent for a rifled choke was taken out in 1885, and in an agreement with Holland & Holland, he received payment of 2 pounds, 2 shillings each time his patent was used. Holland & Holland coined the name “paradox” because this unusual gun could shoot ball very accurately out to 100 yards, and was still effective as a shotgun delivering a modified choke pattern. The patent was quite successful, and Holland produced approximately 1500 of these guns from 1886 until the First World War. They have resumed production in the last couple of years. Ammunition is supposedly being made available. This gun is one of the very first produced, and has 28″ dovetailed laminated steel barrels engraved “Holland & Holland. 98 New Bond Street. London.” “Winners of all the “Field” Rifle Trials. 1883″ and “PARADOX” “Fosbery Patent” on flat quarter rib. Two folding leaf express sight is dovetailed through rib, and is marked for 50 and 100 yards. Silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into rib. There is an old hole where shotgun bead was once installed, but it has been filled. Bbl flats are stamped with original London black powder proofs and 1988 Birmingham nitro re-proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs, “Choke” “64” (possibly 64th Paradox made?), as well as “H466”. Round bar Perkes patent sidelock top lever action features Webley patent gas check. Patent information is on breech face. Water table is marked with Perkes patent information, SN, as well as proofs. Non-automatic safety has “Safe” relief engraved. Action and lockplates are engraved with about 40% coverage English scroll. “Holland & Holland” is on each lockplate. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN on long tang. Lightly marbled and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over original ribbed horn buttplate. Standard checkering is at 22 LPI with mullered borders. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.740, right -.743. Bore restrictions: left -.042, right -.045. Rifle choke groove diameter for both bbls is approx. .710. Wall thickness: left -.030, right -.021. Drop at heel: 2″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs. 7 oz, LOP 14-1/2″. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 95% of very pleasing re-brown, probably done at time of re-proof. Paradox rifling has never been altered, which is unusual, as many of these have been bored out. Action is mostly pewter gray, but with traces of original case color in protected areas. Lockplates are all pewter gray. Stock retains nearly all of an older oil finish with a few minor nicks and dings. There is a very small chip at rear of right lock. Checkering is somewhat worn, and has been judiciously re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls on face. Bores are bright and shiny, but with some minor frosting evident toward breech ends. This gun handles and balances quite well. 4-40784 MGM115 (5,000-10,000)
