JOHN FULTON FOLINSBEE (American, 1892-1972) “THE SQUALL”. Oil on masonite coastal scene shows waves breaking over coastal rocks with white tipped gray and blue sea with two small sailboats holding fast to their moorings. Glints of land beyond the sailboats, all under gray sky. Signed lower right. The back having a deaccessioned label from the New Britain Museum of Art. Also titled and signed on reverse. Housed in a fine modern gilt incised frame. SIZE: 15-3/4″ x 20″. PROVENANCE: A letter from the John F. Folinsbee Art Trust Catalog Raisonne Project dated June 13, 2007 indicates this work will be included in the catalog raisonne. The catalog entry indicates that it was painted circa 1954. Included in the New Jersey State Museum Exhibition Catalog of John Folinsbee, 1983; illustrated in black and white. A copy of this letter accompanies the painting.
