RARE BOSS DBL BBL HAMMER SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 2956. This is gun #2 of a set with 30″ fine pattern Damascus bbls, choked CYL/CYL with smooth tapered concave rib, one bead with the maker’s name & address and the number “2”. The receiver, lockplates & hammers are wonderfully engraved in extremely fine foliate arabesque patterns with dolphin nose hammers and delicate dbl scalloped fences with about 85% coverage. It has the unusual Purdey thumb opening lever which consists of a wide flared front half of the trigger guard with a hole for access to the thumb lever. It is fitted with spectacular marble cake Circassian walnut with checkered splinter forearm secured with a single wedge and straight stock with teardrop side panels, 14-1/8″ over a smooth steel buttplate that is inscribed “MONACO. JANY. 1874 / GRAND PRIX DU CASINO / DIVIDED 1ST & 2ND PRIZES / VALUE 13,200 Fs / WITH SIR W. CALL BART / 54 COMPETITORS / WON TWO SWEEPS, VALUE TOGETHER / 2,000 Fs”. There is a small oval initial plate on the bottom with intertwined initials that appear to be “WCB” or some combination thereof. Bore restrictions: left – .000, right – .000. Drop at the heel 2-3/8″, drop at the comb 1-13/16″. Accompanied by a modern foam lined plastic case. Bbls are recently nitro-proofed to 2-3/4”. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain about 95% lightly faded, extremely fine Damascus pattern. Receiver & lockplates have orig case colors in the sheltered areas, stronger around the hammers, more so on the right side. Trigger guard retains most of a restored finish with some very fine pitting. Wood is crisp & sharp, retaining virtually all of a wonderful professionally restored finish with one small raised spot on the right side and a couple of minor , tiny nicks & scratches. Checkering has been freshened. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case is fine. 4-54325 JR569 (12,000-17,000)
