FIGURAL MORTAR & PESTLE APOTHECARY TRADE SIGN. Spectacular early illuminated trade sign features a gilt painted copper mortar and pestle encrusted with glass jewels. The mortar is set with blue, green and lavender jewels while the pestle is set with smaller blue, green red and opalescent colors. Probably manufactured by Travis, McLewee & Ferry Co., of New York, circa 1900, who credited themselves with creating the world’s first illuminated trade signage. Originally designed to sit mounted on a post outside the apothecary shop. SIZE: 32″ tall. CONDITION: Older gilt repaint; missing several jewels, otherwise in nice condition. 1-26962 (2,000-4,000)
