PHILIP HOWARD EVERGOOD (American, 1901-1973) “FLOWERS BY THE LAKE”. Outstanding and important oil on canvas by Philip Evergood. Scene shows a young blonde girl in yellow bikini at the top of a stairway holding an earthenware bulbous vase full of red poppies. The red poppies with green stems fill half of the painting and partly obscure the scene behind her which includes several large boats on water, one of which is going through a railroad bridge which has rotated to allow it through. A lighthouse is seen next to multi-storied house and the open ocean is beyond. Signed lower left “Philip Evergood” and dated “55”. Housed in a period partial gilt molded wood frame with linen liner. There are three labels, one from the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford Conn., with artist, title and owner as Whitney Museum of American Art. The other label of Terry Dintenfass, Inc. New York; and a third label which is only partially present. SIZE: 48-1/2” x 30”. CONDITION: Very good, some craquelure. There are several small white painted sections that fluoresce under uv light which appears to be the same white in other areas. 9-74498 FP (100,000-150,000)
