EXTREMELY RARE PRESENTATION SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1869 CADET RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. SN 434. 29-5/8” rnd bbl. Standard Springfield markings on lock and breechblock. 1868 improvements, including the single step ramrod & sgl leaf rear sight with graduations to 9 are included. Breechblock is dated 1870. Top of buttplate is engraved in script “J A J Creswell / Elkton MD”. Left side of stock has a sharp “ESA” cartouche. John Andrew Jackson Creswell was a Representative & Senator from Maryland. He was appointed Postmaster General in Ulysses S Grant’s cabinet from 1869-1874. Among the papers accompanying this rifle is a copy of the letter from the Chief of Ordnance with the Commanding Officer at Springfield Armory: “You will be pleased to make a Springfield breech loading Musket for the Post Master General, and sent it to this office with a bill or statement of the cost of the same. The musket is to be of the same length, and to have the same stock (which is to be varnished) as the Cadet Musket, Model of 1866. The arm to be fine sighted and provided with a set trigger; the barrel to be browned; and the name – “J. A. J. Creswell” – to be stamped on the tang of the Butt plate, as the Cadet Muskets are now marked.” This appears to be the single “sporting rifle” that was made in 1871. While the sights appear to be normal, an unusual single set trigger with a large adjustment screw at the rear has been added. Other items accompanying the lot are copies of Creswell’s “REBEL RESOLUTION” of 14 Feb 1861, an autograph, and 2 copies of portraits in gold frames. CONDITION: Excellent. Retains most of blue on bbl and tang with casehardening pattern visible on breechblock and lockplate. Wood is sharp, with minor handling marks. Most of varnish remains. Mechanically fine. 4-58869 FS690 (25,000-50,000)
