*JAMES PURDEY HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN. SN 17274. (1901) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 29″ Chopper lump bbls are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House, South Audley Street, London.” “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel” on concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN and “Choke”. Whitworth tube numbers “25524” and “25525” are on loop. Barrelmakers initials “WH” (William Hill) are on bottom of left bbl. Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers, as well as London re-proof for 65 mm chambers at 850 bar (bore diameter at 18.8), with proof date of 1993. Beesley self-opening action features automatic safety (“SAFE” inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, and engraved arrow tumbler end cocking indicators. Action and lockplates are engraved with Purdey house style bouquet and scroll. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on lockplates. “Purdey’s Patent” is on bottom of action. “1” is on top lever. Fences have very unusual and pleasing treatment of relief trefoil vines (poison ivy?) with fine scroll background. Standard blued steel trigger guard has scroll engraving and SN at grip. Nicely streaked and figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over Silvers type pad, and features drop points, 22 LPI checkering with mullered borders, and large vacant gold oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend has gold numeral “1” inlaid in central diamond, and Anson release. Forend iron is stamped with SN, “Patent,” and “1” is engraved. Actioners initials “W.N” (Wesley Nobbs) are on iron. Bore diameter: left -.738, right -.739. Bore restrictions: left -.013, right -.011. Wall thickness: left -.020, right -.017. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-7/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 7.7 oz, LOP 14-3/4″. CONDITION: Fine, as refurbished. Bbls retain virtually all of very fine London quality satin blue. Action is finished bright. Engraving on bottom of action and bbl rib have been correctly re-cut. Pins and striker disks have been heat blued. Trigger guard and top lever show good quality re-blue, and retain most all of that blue. Buttstock is a very pleasing, and well done, replacement, obviously done by someone who understood the Purdey tradition. Forend has been refinished and checkering has been re-cut. Action is tight. Bbls are slightly off face. Drop is down, forend just touching action. Ejectors are in time. Bores are excellent, but with a few very minor marks. 4-40087 MGM21 (10,000-15,000)
