HOLLAND AND HOLLAND REBOUNDING HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE. SN 14834. Cal. 500 3″ BPE. 26″ Steel dovetailed bbls are engraved “Holland & Holland. 98 New Bond Street, London.” on right, and “Winners of All the “Field” Rifle Trials. London.” on the left. Full length rib is file cut at front and rear, w/ one standing, 2 folding express sight, and orig silver bead longitudinally dovetailed front sight w/ flip-up night bead. Bbl flats have London black powder proofs for “500 EX.” SN “14834” (ca 1888) is stamped on splinter. Action is engraved w/ 40% very well executed shaded scroll, and is engraved “Charge 5 drams. Case 3-1/4” on left side; and has Jones under lever. Back action peninsula locks have matching scroll and are engraved “Holland & Holland.” Serpentine hammers are scroll engraved terminating in stylized dolphin heads. Case hardened trigger guard has scroll engraving w/ SN at grip. Top tang is extended over comb. Broadly streaked European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/4″ over fairly new leather covered pad, features a horn grip cap, sling eye, beaded right hand cheek piece, 26 LPI checkering w/ single and double line borders, and silver oval engraved “F.W.Heath” and “R.A.” Lever release forend has wood and checkering to match buttstock. Drop at Heel: approx 2-3/4″. Drop at Comb: approx 1-3/4″. Weight: 9 lbs 7oz. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain 70-80% orig blue/ brown, thinning around forend. Action retains 30-40% orig case color, fading to silver. Left lock plate is mostly silver w/ 20-30% case color under hammer. Right lock plate has 80% case color thinning to rear. Trigger guard has 20-30% case color. Stocks show most of an old refinish, and show evidence of having been glass-bedded. Checkering appears original w/ some wear. Six groove rifling is very strong, bores are shiny, some very light pitting toward breeches. Screw slots are good, but show some use. Action is tight.
