*VERY FINE J. PURDEY “LIGHTWEIGHT” BEST SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE. SN 24287. (1933) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. This lovely little gun has 25″ bbls, as popularized by E. J. Churchill. Very narrow concave deeply swamped top rib is engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London.” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel.” with scroll at breech end. Bottoms of bbls have SN. Bottom of left bbl is marked “SS” (Sam Simons, Barrel maker). Splinter is engraved “Made in England”, and Whitworth tube nos. “60476” and “60477” are on loop. Bbl flats have London provisional and definitive nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Typical Beesley patent self-opening action features bushed strikers, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, automatic safety with “SAFE” inlaid in gold, and double triggers with front trigger “loose.” Action and lockplates are finely engraved with Purdey house style bouquet and scroll. Lockplates are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons”. Bottom of action is engraved “J. Purdey & Sons London.” Trigger guard has typical scroll with SN on grip. Very nicely marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over checkered wood butt, and features 24 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders and drop points. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. The iron is marked with SN, and initials “PW” (Percy Wilkes, Actioner). Bore diameter: left -.735, right -.733. Bore restrictions: left -.028, right -.007. Wall thickness: left -.030, right -.029. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-7/16″. Weight: 6 lbs. 2.6 oz, LOP 14-1/2″. Makers leather motor case has initials “R. B.” embossed on lid. Front of case is embossed “James Purdey & Sons, Ltd.” “Made in England”, “The Purdey Lightweight”, and “Regd. No. 727366”. Interior is lined in maroon cloth with leather Purdey label. Accessories include a booklet (Purdey Guns, dated 1929), 2-pc rosewood cleaning rod, oil bottle, snap caps, cleaning implements, a bone handled cleaning brush, and some Purdey business cards. PROVENANCE: Purdey factory email. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refurbished. Bbls retain 90% of what is probably original black, thinning toward breeches, silvered at muzzles, with marks from handling and use. Action retains 20% original case color, and is mostly silver. Lockplates retain 80 – 90% of their case color, silvered toward tails. Trigger plate retains most of its original case color where it extends into action. Top lever retains most of its bright blue, silvered at thumbpiece. Trigger guard retains 20% of its original blue with grip area silver-gray. Stocks retain most of a rubbed oil finish. New butt has been nearly invisibly added to head of stock, with joint in checkering. (Factory letter specifies original stock length at 13-11/16″ with leather covered recoil pad, and weight at 5 lbs 15-1/2 oz.) Checkering has been correctly freshened. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Drop is good. Ejectors are in time. Bores are excellent, but with some minor freckling in left bore toward breech (otherwise no visible imperfections). Case is fine. Light colored leather shows numerous marks and rubs. Straps and handle are intact, but getting tired. Interior cloth is good, with some staining and thinning. Accessories are fine.
