WOODWARD BEST QUALITY UNDER LEVER HAMMER DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE. SN 3610. Cal. 450 3-1/4″ BPE. Non-rebounding locks. 26-1/8″ Dovetailed Damascus bbls are engraved “James Woodward & Sons, 64 St.James’s Street. London.” on full length file cut dolls head extension rib w/ one standing, 1 folding platinum lined express rear sight w/ longitudinally dovetailed newly made aluminum bead front. Bbl flats have London black powder proofs. Bottoms of bbls are marked “J.W. & S”, SN “3610” (ca 1878), “Henry’s Patent” w/ patent use nos. “238” on right bbl, and “237” on the left. Bottom rib has sling eye installed. Fairly small action has double under lugs, actuated by a push forward snap action lever over guard, w/ SN “3610” on water table, and “James Woodward & Sons” stamped on breech face. Action is engraved w/ finely executed English scroll, w/ nicely filed fences. Front action locks are engraved “J. Woodward & Sons” w/ matching scroll, and have front mounted stalking safeties. Trigger guard has scroll engraving and the SN relief engraved at the grip. Nicely streaked European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2″ over checkered hard rubber butt plate, w/ large vacant gold oval, sling eye, horn grip cap, and double beaded large right hand cheek piece. Checkered at 20 LPI w/ mullered borders. Lever release splinter forend shows 90% checkering. Drop at heel: approx 3″. Drop at comb: Approx 2″. Weight: 8 lbs 8oz. Leather CASE has stitched leather corners, and brass medallion in center of lid. Interior lined w/ green cloth and has C B Vaughan label. Case contains spare front sight. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 95% of very pleasing re-brown w/ good definition. Sharp edges of rib slightly rounded. Action retains traces of case color in protected areas, is mostly mottled silver. Lock plates retain 30-40% orig case color. Trigger guard and opening lever retain most of their re-black, w/ engraving slightly washed and silvering from use. Stocks show virtually all of fairly glossy refinish. Checkering is re-cut. Bores are strong, slightly frosted throughout. Action is tight. Right bbl slightly off face. Locks are crisp. CASE leather has been refurbished, shows many scuffs from use, new corners stitched on, new straps and handle. Interior partitions are solid, cloth is good.
